Finding Aids

This collection includes finding aids and container lists for materials in the Zach S. Henderson Library Special Collections.

A Finding Aid contains a listing of the collection's contents and their location within Special Collections. It will often describe and summarize the contents of a collection including aspects of its arrangement; the scope of its subject matter; organizations and persons of relevancy; and its chronology.

    Zach S. Henderson Library Special Collections

    This collection consists of Lucile Hodges personal family papers and genealogical research pertaining to families in and around Fort Stewart, Bryan County, Bulloch County, Evans County, Tattnall county, and others. Materials span 1897-1989 and include handwritten transcripts of several county census records, newspaper clippings, notes, scrapbooks, and photographs.

    Magnolia Gardens research transcripts

    Zach S. Henderson Library Special Collections

    The collection consists of recordings and transcripts of oral history interviews conducted by Dr. George A. Rogers and Susan Moody in 1997 and 1998. Those interviewed were Mrs. Lee Anderson, Dr. Charlton Moseley and Mrs. Willie Lee Moseley, James Rigdon, and Mary Lee Jones Tucker. Interviewees remembered Daniel Edgar Bland and his wife Catherine as well as their farm, Magnolia Springs. Mr. and Mrs Bland both attended First District Agricultural and Mechanical School. The land on which their farm thrived is now part of the University, and the homestead itself is now the University Botanical Gardens.

    Margaret Mitchell letters to Laura Dorough Dyar

    Zach S. Henderson Library Special Collections

    This collection consists of a series of twenty-one letters to Laura Dorough “Mother” Dyar from Margaret Mitchell, Mitchell’s husband, John Marsh, and Mitchell’s secretary Margaret E. Baugh, dating anywhere from 1936 to 1950. Most are signed by “Peggy” Mitchell, a nickname that Margaret Mitchell went by beginning in the 1920s. One letter is handwritten and includes a handwritten envelope while the others are typed. The letters, mostly the exchange of two close friends, contain content related to Mitchell’s writing of Gone With the Wind as well as mentions of the movie. Also included in the collection are printed and electronic research materials related to the Dyar family including newspaper clippings and photographs related to the letters, dating from 1921 to 2017.

    This collection consists of materials documenting this history of Marvin Pittman Laboratory School. Materials span 1938-1997 the bulk of which cover 1970-1997 and include yearbooks, scrapbooks, student work, plaques, slides, photographs, and ephemera. Documentation of core expectations, courses taught, accomplishments, student/parent handbooks, and various activities during events are also housed in this collection.

    Mary Annis Keller family papers

    Zach S. Henderson Library Special Collections

    This collection consists of photocopied letters of the Keller family of Bulloch County, Georgia from 1862-1903. Most letters are addressed to Mary Annis Keller (later Hodges), from cousins serving in the Confederate Army as well as later letters from other family members. Also included are muster rolls of various Confederate units, 1860 census records of Chatham and Effingham Counties, and a chart showing the value of Confederate money to gold, 1861-May 1866.

    This collection consists of the papers of Mary Evelyn Fortune from 1939 to 2000. Materials include diplomas, newspaper clippings, photographs, certificates, awards, documents related to her involvement in civic organizations, and her funeral book.

    Zach S. Henderson Library Special Collections

    This collection consists of materials created and collected by Mary Sue Deloach Smith as part of her 1999 dissertation, What did it mean to be a boarding teacher in a rural Bulloch County community in the 1930s and 1940s. Materials include In-depth interviews with fourteen people who worked as boarding teachers in Bulloch County, 1930-1940s, and transcription. Additional materials include three commissary account books for John H. Brannen farm, six miles west of Statesboro from 1929-1950s.

    The collection consists of correspondence, photographs, printed articles and brochures, drafts and personal cards and letters of Maxwell Taylor Courson while at Georgia Southern College. Events covered include conferences on Georgia Offshore Oil and Proposition 13, as well as information about Dr. Charles Herty, preparatory to writing an article. Also the College's acquisition of Windsor Village apartments, which became dormitories.

    Melissa Brown collection of "A Loud Absence" project materials

    Zach S. Henderson Library, Special Collections

    This collection consists of photographs and digital files created by artist Melissa Brown as part of her project, titled "A Loud Absence." According to the artist, the project sought to discover what happens to a space after great injustice has been committed in it. The project examines whether a community's choice of what to do with such an area reflects healing or reveals that they have not moved forward from their past.

    This collection consists of materials pertaining to the planning and celebration of the 2009 centennial celebration of Johnny Mercer's birth, as well as materials related to the Johnny Mercer statue project in Savannah. Spanning 2004 to 2010, materials include commemorative documents, news clippings, magazine articles, programs, correspondence, posters, and brochures gathered by The Friends of Johnny Mercer.

    This collection consists of materials related to the family of American lyricist and songwriter, Johnny Mercer. Materials span 1906 to 2010 and include letters, photographs, published material, newspaper clippings, memorabilia and unpublished manuscripts. The collection focuses on the Mercer family, especially Lilian C. Mercer and Nancy Mercer Gerard, as well as the life and career of Johnny Mercer.

    This collection consists of materials documenting the career of contemporary American composer and Georgia Southern University Professor Emeritus Michael Braz. Materials span 2004 - 2007, and include professional files, photographs, costume designs, a three-dimensional set model, and articles primarily related to the 2007 production of A Scholar Under Siege. The opera concerns desegregation and racial politics in 1941 Georgia, focusing on the firing of Marvin Pittman, President of Georgia Teachers College, by Georgia governor Eugen Talmadge.

    Zach S. Henderson Library Special Collections

    Spanning 1908-2023, this collection contains published materials acquired by the Gretsch Company that are either related to the Gretsch Company or to the various aspects of the music industry. This includes catalogs and advertisements from other music instrument manufacturers, materials from music events or trade shows over the years, and publications such as newsletters and magazines.

    Zach S. Henderson Library Special Collections

    The collection consists of correspondence to Naomi L.D. Cox of Clayton's Mills, Pickens County, South Carolina from 1859-1869. The letters from family members discuss personal and farm news, but also mention the secession of Tennessee and South Carolina, life and living conditions in Tennessee during the Civil War and Reconstruction, and some descriptions of battles in Tennessee. Correspondents include Malinda D. Cox, Henrietta Cox, and Sallie Cox. The collection also contains an Atlanta Constitution advertisement, a letter between the donors of the collection, and a photograph.

    Ogeechee Riverkeeper Oral Histories

    Zach S. Henderson Library Special Collections

    This collection consists of oral history interviews of people who grew up living on the Ogeechee River and its watershed. The interviews were conducted from 2016-2017 for Phase I of the Ogeechee Project, but the topics span a broad range of time - including family lore and artifacts from Native American settlement and the Colonial Period through today. Materials include photographs and written documents with audio recordings making the bulk of the collection. Materials were originally collected by c.a.s.e. Consulting Services for the Ogeechee Riverkeeper organization.

    This collection consists of the research files of Patrick Novotny, Professor of Political Science at Georgia Southern University. Materials include booklets, leaflets, newspaper articles, journal articles, and other published materials from 1929-2001. Subjects include environmental justice, 20th century Georgia politics, civil rights, and race relations.

    The Patrick Novotny papers formerly consisted of three separate collections titled “Patrick Novotny: Where We Live, Work, and Play, Research Materials, 1973-1979,”“20th Century Georgia Politics Research Materials,” and “Contemporary Sources on the case of U.S. vs. Darby Lumber Co.” Each former collection is now listed as a series here.
