Finding Aids

This collection includes finding aids and container lists for materials in the Zach S. Henderson Library Special Collections.

A Finding Aid contains a listing of the collection's contents and their location within Special Collections. It will often describe and summarize the contents of a collection including aspects of its arrangement; the scope of its subject matter; organizations and persons of relevancy; and its chronology.

    This collection consists of 187 photographs of churches and historical locations in the Ogeechee River area in southeast Georgia taken by Samuel “Fred” Hood during the 1970s. Photographs feature historic churches in the areas surrounding the Ogeechee River Valley in southeast Georgia.

    This collection consists of correspondence between Asbury “Sankey” Lee Johnson and Sarah Elizabeth Thompson from 1861-1864, Transcripts (typed and handwritten) of correspondence are included as well as three ambrotypes; a family Bible, hymnal; coin silverware; and quilt.

    The collection consists of photocopied negatives of eighteen plats and seven petitions, as well as deeds and inventories of properties on the Savannah River during the late Colonial period, circa 1760-1780.

    S. E. “Zeke” Perkins papers

    Zach S. Henderson Library Special Collections

    The collection consists of printed and manuscript materials collected by S. E. “Zeke” Perkins, a lifelong resident of Evans County, Georgia. Materials include printed and manuscript materials related to several churches and the Hepzibah Baptist Association; a copy of the diary of John Rogers Smith's visit to the last Blue/Gray reunion at Gettysburg (1938); an unpublished manuscript history of the Perkins mill and lumber company, Hagan, Georgia; an unpublished manuscript history of Ezell Masonic lodge; information about Perkins family history; pamphlets and news articles about the Claxton Annual Rattlesnake Roundup (1970-1973); a Georgia almanac (1911); Evans County Jubilee volume (1964) ; and miscellaneous travel brochures and newspaper clippings.

    This collection is an amalgamation of sheet music collections from five sources: the almost 2000 pieces of sheet music of early-20th century popular music acquired by Dr. Warren Fields in 1980 from Ms. L. Lieuwenkamp of Savannah, who had been a silent movie pianist; the 67 pieces which were acquired by Smith C. Banks from Mr. George Beasley and family in 1996; and the 218 pieces which came with the papers of Ronald J. Neil in 1994; eleven pieces from the late Richard B. Harwell; and 48 pieces, as well as music books and magazines, from Carolyn Lee.

    This collection consists of a variety of materials from the four schools that were consolidated into Southeast Bulloch High School. The bulk of the materials span 1947 to 1955 and include administrative records, correspondence, instructor materials, textbooks, student work, and publications of state and national agricultural organizations.

    This collection consists of aerial photographs of Georgia counties produced by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) from the 1940s to 1950s. The collection contains standard and oversized aerial photographs of Georgia counties including Bulloch, Screven, Toombs, Emanuel, Jenkins, and Wayne, and surrounding counties.

    This collection consists of records of the Southern Chapter of the American Conference for Irish Studies. Materials include correspondence, meeting programs and minutes, reports, and membership lists. Much of the material concerns the annual meeting and other activities of the organization from 1989 to 2014.

    Zach S. Henderson Library Special Collections

    This collection consists of materials related to the Spencer Wallace Cone family spanning 1810-1976 with the majority of materials dated between 1810 and 1892.. Materials include nineteenth and early twentieth century correspondence between members of the Cone family, including Spencer Houghton Cone and Spencer Wallace Cone. Also included are military documents related to the 61st New York Infantry regiment, legal documents, biographical information, sermons and notes by Spencer Houghton Cone, records of the Oliver Street Church (1825-1840), a household account book, photographs, and records relating to the settlement of Spencer Houghton Cone II’s estate. Spencer Wallace Cone’s literary works, including published and unpublished literary manuscripts, as well as artifacts collected by the Cone family are also included.

    Statesboro Civic Improvement scrapbooks

    Zach S. Henderson Library Special Collections

    Three scrapbooks are entries in Georgia Power's Community Pride contest for the early 1950's. The other is an entry promoting conservation in a contest sponsored by Georgia Association of Conservation and Georgia Electric Membership Corporation. All contain historic photographs and information about new building and civic improvements at those times. The 1973 volume was coordinated with the Bulloch County Federated Garden’s Club.

    Zach S. Henderson Library Special Collections

    This collection includes the creative works of Stephen D. Geller and personal materials ranging from 1954-2007. Creative works include his completed screenplays, teleplays, scripts, manuscripts, novels, poems, research files, and other related materials. Personal bound copies of some of his works are handwritten while others are typed. Personal materials include family photographs, an astrology birth chart, correspondence, and materials related to Geller’s early education.

    This collection consists of the research materials of Georgia Southern University Professor of Biology, Sturgis McKeever. Materials span 1921-1973 and include numerous reprints in regards to research on various animal species across North America. This collection also includes correspondence between McKreever and other academic researchers, written graphs, and charts. In addition, there are negatives and images in regards to his extensive notes and research.

    This collection includes photocopies of early records, 1804-1858, of three Tattnall County Baptist churches including Beards Creek Baptist (later Beards Creek Primitive Baptist), Cedar Creek Baptist (later Cedar Creek Primitive Baptist), and Salem Baptist (later Salem Missionary Baptist).

    This collection consists of forty-four letters received by Dr. (then Sgt.) Kemp Mabry from Thérèse Roué Chauvin, a French child whom he began correspondence with beginning in 1945, until Chauvin’s death in 1993. Additionally, this collection contains one letter from Thérèse Roué Chauvin to Gilbert and Olympia Shahbaz, and two letters from Shahbaz to Kemp Mabry. The collection also contains a bound volume of reproductions and translations of the material, containing the entirety of the collection.

    The Week: An Industrial, Financial, and Agricultural Review

    Zach S. Henderson Library Special Collections

    This collection consists of typescript articles on letterhead titled The Week: An Industrial, Financial, and Agricultural Review. The articles cover topics related to public utilities (especially rural electrification), agricultural diversification and reform, economic development in Georgia, and the work of the Utilities Information Committee of Georgia, an alliance between businessmen and landowners formed in 1919 to promote economic development. Most of the articles are undated but content indicates that they were written from 1926 through 1928.

    Zach S. Henderson Library Special Collections

    This collection consists of approximately 668 photograph slides (color; 35 mm) taken by Tom Kohler and Susan Earl from 2006 to 2009. Slides capture artwork in the Savannah area. Collection also includes print photographs and compact discs containing digital files that supplement materials found on the slides. The collection is named in honor of Waddie Welcome, a respected individual who was part of the greater community.

    This collection consists of materials relating to Dr. Walter J. Fraser’s research for his published books. Materials span from 1988 to 2005, and include research materials relating to the writing of four books; Portraits of Conflict: A Photographic History of Georgia in the Civil War, Charleston! Charleston! The History of a Southern City, Savannah in the 2 Old South, and Lowcountry Hurricanes: Three Centuries of Storms at Sea and Ashore. Materials include typescript book manuscripts, handwritten and typescript notes, interview transcripts, newspaper articles, maps, photographs, and photocopied research materials including city and county court records.
