Description

I will read and then analyze my original poem “Song of the Wheels” by comparing it to the two poems that influenced it. My poem is inspired by my impressions of Thomas Hood’s “Song of the Shirt” and Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s “The Cry of the Children” both written in 1843. The concepts and imagery in both Protest Poems made an impression on me, and my own experiences in the exploitative modern American workforce. My poem is an imitation of the two Victorian poems from the perspective of the people in power. I set out to mimic the style of the two poems while switching the perspective from the oppressed to the oppressor in a way similar to how many modern labor rights songs have in the past five years. The goal was to give the sincerity of the originals a twist towards the satirical while still keeping the themes of the children’s labor rights in mind to try to connect to a more modern reader.
