Description

This presentation explains a research proposal I developed which investigates how the GS community (current students, faculty, and alumni) perceives the usefulness and applicability of the CORE 2000: Core Capstone, as well as its effectiveness in addressing and mitigating retention concerns in sophomores compared to the support offered to freshmen by its sister program FYE 1220: First Year Seminar. The aim of this proposal is to examine possible factors influencing worsening sophomore attrition rates and shed light on the disparities between freshman and sophomore support in higher education. Following the national trend of first year support initiatives’ promising improvements in retention, the need for universities to again examine their student success strategies and fully address the transitional second year has become even more pressing. This proposal calls attention to the overwhelming lack of research on sophomore assistance initiatives and explores the potential refinement of existing programs like GS’ CORE 2000 model.
