Description
I will be presenting an audio performance of my play, The Importance of Being Scholarly: A Pedantic Play for the Academically Inclined. This was written as a modern imitation of Oscar Wilde’s play, The Importance of Being Earnest: A Trivial Comedy for Serious People. Following Wilde’s blueprint gave me the confidence I needed to try my hand at an artistic style, as creative writing has never been my forte. By imitating his play, I was able to push aside my hesitancy and grow as a writer. In my imitation, I endeavored to capture Wilde’s quippy tone, simple structure, and his exploration of ingenuine morality. I have kept the names the same, or similar, to the original story for ease of transition. For example, by using “Algernina,” my reader knows that this character will exhibit many of the same traits as Oscar Wilde’s Algernon. Where I could, I kept to the structure and format of the original work, for example, the use of italics and parenthesis when describing a scene, an action, or a speaker’s tone. As seen with Wilde’s original characters, the subjective morality and logic exhibited in this story are deeply flawed and taken to the extreme for comedic effect.
