Abstract

This creative presentation will reflect on how the training and techniques I learned in Professor Laura Valeri’s creative writing class in Fall 2022 prepared me to write a work of high-quality long form fiction this semester in her Advanced Fiction class. The technical aspects I will discuss include how image, voice, setting, insight, and story must all come together in service of the narrative, and I will read a selection of my short works that highlight these techniques. I will also touch on my experiences as a legacy student who took a non-traditional path through my work and in life to get where I am today, and I will explain how these experiences are all assets to my creative process. Additionally, I will explain how Professor Valeri’s classes are directly responsible for my switching from my current Interdisciplinary Studies program into the new online English program, a program that feels to me as if I wished it into existence, and my plans for continued creativity through my senior year at Georgia Southern and beyond.
