About SoTL – Analysis, synthesis, reflection, and discussion

Abstract

Sport-for-development (SFD) service-learning programs attempt to use sport as a catalyst for creating change in a community (Bruening et al., 2014). The purpose of this study is to examine preliminary observations to identify strengths and weaknesses surrounding an SFD course to show the value and viability of implementing service-learning. Participants are students enrolled in an SFD service-learning course at a rural university in the US. Student logs, class presentations, and student-written reviews were all utilized in the present study. This work seeks to build a foundation for subsequent research on making service-based learning courses more prominent within sport management curriculum.
