Teaching Practices (Poster Only) – Analysis, synthesis, reflection, and discussion
Abstract
Building rapport with students has been shown to be a key factor in student’s academic success. Instructors who build rapport have been viewed as welcoming, encouraging, positive, and have a genuine interest in students. In this analysis, six semesters worth of data tracks the impact of early semester meetings on student success. Across 19 courses, students who met with faculty for brief 5-10 minute meetings during the first 3 weeks of the semester had higher end of semester grades in all 19 courses. The difference between groups ranged from 0.10% up to 13.3%. Impacts on classroom performance will be discussed.
