Abstract
Hitler is one of the most hated people of all time. At a very young age children are taught about the horrors of the Holocaust and the man who created it. President George Herbert Walker Bush repeatedly compared Saddam Hussein and the invasion of Kuwait to Hitler and the Nazis throughout the Gulf War. He spoke about the helpless nation of Kuwait being taken over, plumaged, and virtually torn apart by the dictator of Iraq. The language used by people and governments during times of war and crisis have an enormous impact on the support and feelings about the war. A deductive form of persuasion that uses logical conclusions for the argument and the truth is concluded by the premise is known as a syllogism. If one or more parts of a syllogism are missing or inferred by the audience then it becomes an enthymeme. Aristotle regards enthymemes as the strongest of the proofs. The power of the enthymeme is derived from the process of the deductive form from within the listener (Delia, 2007). This paper will discuss the use of an enthymeme used by George Herbert Walker Bush to associate Saddam Hussein to Hitler. The use of this enthymeme is to create support for a foreign war after America encountered a devastating loss to Vietnam. This paper will explain the implications of word choice and the effect they have during war time.
