Abstract
The aim of this paper is to examine the creation of a homosexual identity in Germany during WW1 and in the Weimar period. Unlike much scholarship, which focuses on the scientific or political, this paper will examine the lived experiences of queer men in Germany with a focus on the ways in which they organized, advocated, and generally made their community visible. LGBTQ history is an underreasearched discipline and many scholars focus on sources about the queer community, rather than sources from them. By analyzing publications of the time and the work of gay advocacy groups, this work seeks to shift the focus.
