Description

‘Vulnerable’ was sparked to life after consuming a mixture of course-assigned readings and TedTalks for my Creativity for Writers course. Kirby Ferguson has a TedTalk, ‘Creativity is a Remix.’ In it, he presents the idea of transfiguring one creative work and squeezing it into the confounds of your own. Austin Kleon furthered this idea in his book ‘Steal Like an Artist.’ He proposes that one could make new meaning and perspective on top of something that already exists in a different form. Ajayi Jones’ ‘Get Comfortable with Being Uncomfortable,’ and Zadie Smith’s ‘Fail Better’ both speak about opening oneself up to being hurt by one’s passions. Criticism and failure are necessary steps toward improvement. I put their ideas into practice with this project. I created a lyric video to the tone of Selena Gomez’s Vulnerable. I remixed the lyrics to tell the story of an artist who’s afraid of being criticized. Their anxiety and fear bubbled up to a simple conclusion. “I’ll stay vulnerable.” Images of snowflakes and flowers flash behind the lyrics: their perfect forms obscured by distressed scratches and patches of bright light. There is an erroneous belief that creativity is a given trait. This project breaks this notion, embracing the idea of making mistakes and being burned on the journey to making meaningful art.
