Description

"Behind the Black Cloak" is an illustrated story in verse that tells the personal journey of a young writer discouraged from expressing herself by bullies. The writer shuts down from the bullying, but soon learns that she must recover her courage in order to continue to make her art and to parse out destructive criticism from helpful advice. The project employs a creative narrative to express fundamental concepts on the relationship between vulnerability, criticism, and creativity derived from essays and lectures by writers Zadie Smith, Austin Kleon, Brene Brown, Julia Cameron and James Webb Brown. "Behind the Black Cloak" was composed using a remix technique that combines personal experiences with hidden phrases from various lectures and readings by these artists, and my own drawings.
