Description
During the fall semester of 2021, Dr. Gearhart reached out to me to see if I was interested in participating in a pilot course to engage in our local community. I had no hesitation to be a part of this initiative. This spring semester, I have been volunteering at the Coastal Children’s Advocacy Outreach Center. Alongside two native Spanish speakers, I have had the opportunity to learn about the incredible work this organization does for our community. The Outreach Center has allowed me to assist in their goal of creating accessible information for the wellbeing of families who have undergone traumatic experiences in life. Children have access to therapy through this center in order to help heal from sexual abuse. We also aim to spread awareness of the rights of undocumented immigrants and help them to know what services and laws are in existence to support them. The sense of purpose I feel engaging in this course; opportunity to improve my reading, writing, and Spanish skills; and ability to connect with and help children in otherwise ignored populations has brought a new appreciation for education and revived my love for learning. Ultimately, this program is worth sharing and continuing. With this presentation, I will share my experiences and why I believe it is important to continue in this direction of hands-on learning with a deep involvement in our community.
