Description
"Look Something Different: L.S.D. (...Just the High Points)" was submitted as the final paper for Theatre History II in Spring 2020. The paper called for there to be research done on a singular topic with a variety of productions to choose from. "Look Something Different..." analyzes the difference in the creative process that The Wooster Group pursued while creating their controversial production. The paper highlights their production's differences in the avant-garde to the standard theatrical expectations of the 1980s. There is no glossing over the more outdated stereotypes in the production either that adds to the controversy the group faced. It can be interpreted as an antiquarianism message. That message is bringing the outdated into modern times to show how ridiculous and unbelievable it was for those stereotypes to be seen as the "norm". “Look Something Different…” does not attempt to make light of these controversies but rather states what they were and the reasons for why. It is an unbiased look into a production, the opinions of the 1980s theatrical world, and the critics/reviewers. The paper breaks down into overall arching sections that flow together to tell the narrative of what The Wooster Group attempted and made a lasting mark with. It shows the two different controversies the group went through and their attempts to rectify one of those. There are also descriptions of what unconventional theatre looked like to them and how they made inconvenient parts of the show to fit the style.
