Getting to WE: Recreating Student Leadership on Campus
Abstract
As the Department of Residential and Campus Life was formed, we have encountered a lack of student leadership on our campus at Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW). The professional staff began in July of 2019 bringing experiences from previous institutions challenging to the previous staff who had been in place for a number of years. It became apparent that students did not truly understand leadership and lacked the mentorship that would prepare them for life after GSW. This Fall, we worked as a team with First-year Experience to recreate the interview and selection process for student leaders. This included revamping the LEAD 1500 course for new student leaders. In other areas, we have reconstructed or created lead teams in student employment as well.
