Abstract
The south-eastern United States offers a unique perspective on the interactions between science and culture, as the region is distinguished by a strong cultural sub-current linked to literalistic evangelical systems of belief that are considered to be in conflict with scientific knowledge. These cultural foundations influence not only personal choices but also invade social structures and education policies. The teaching and learning of the theory of evolution is one of the areas in which these interactions are the most evident. Understanding the dynamics at work in this area offers a dialogue-enabling framework in order to move beyond conflict and bring about a discourse and actions that are constructive and beneficial for all.
