Level up Learning: Gamifying Online Assessment with Quizizz

Teaching with Technology – Research

Abstract

Regardless of course delivery, face-to-face or online, instructors and instructional designers struggle to implement strategies aimed at nurturing students study habits (Petrovic-Dzerdz, 2019). Gamification continues to be an emphasis in instructional design in higher education designed to remedy these issues. Through gamification we can offer “voluntary challenges” that encourage positive academic behavior without necessarily tying these challenges to course grading. The goal of gamification is to apply elements from games to non-games in order to make them more motivating and engaging (Hakulinen, Auvinen, & Korhonen, 2015). One way to gamify your online course is through the use of Quizizz, which allows you to administer student-paced formative assessments in a fun and engaging way for students of all ages.
