Understanding Students’ Learning When They Conduct Secondary Research

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to gain a clearer understanding of internal thought processes and student learning during a research course where students conduct secondary research and write a three-chapter paper. After teaching the course for four semesters, the teacher/researcher speculated that students were not engaging with the secondary research in the way she desired. This speculation led to the creation of a convergent mixed-methods study to determine what might need to change in the course. This presentation will share results from the study and ideas for how to increase learning and engagement for students conducting secondary research.
