Teaching Practices (Poster Only) – Analysis, synthesis, reflection, and discussion

Abstract

This study aimed developing student ability to decode realities in an Introductory Sociology course using films d’auteur as alternative analysis sources. The instructor showed movies that most likely are shown in cinema festivals and art movie theater circuits. In doing so, community college students from New York minority populations could come across Latin American, Greek, French, Italian or Old Hollywood movies from a 1948 to 2009 that challenge their expectations about both cinematic language and social codes and behavior. This practice develops content understanding and sparks a fruitful conversation about social constructs and the mainstream- contemporary-western gaze.
