Learning Theories and Pedagogy – Research

Abstract

This research investigated the possibility that teaching the cognitive research behind effective study strategies will increase the quality of study methods that students employ. Four workshops were conducted in which students learned the research findings from several classic cognitive psychology experiments. Then students spent time brainstorming ways to apply this research to their own study strategies. In line with the hypothesis, students reported an increased likelihood of using effective study strategies after learning the cognitive research behind them. Furthermore, students predict that their grades will improve as a result of attending the workshop.
