Learning Theories and Pedagogy – Research
Abstract
The Voices Project is a classroom assignment that uses social psychology theory to reduce stigma in college students. 49 students in two general education courses interviewed a person or family member of someone with a mental health condition and wrote brief memoirs capturing their interviewee’s experiences. Students completed pre-post surveys reporting aspects of mental health stigma. Results showed a statistically significant decrease in negative attributions towards individuals with mental health conditions. This interactive session will present The Voices Project pedagogy and engage participants to explore applications within their own teaching domains.
