Too Early for Research?

Academic/ Professional Development - Research

Abstract

Many students of science do not get a chance to engage in the research process until they have elected a STEM major AND neared the end of their Bachelors' degree. We have offered students ample opportunity for undergraduate research as not only upperclassmen, but as early as Freshman-level. Students operate research-grade equipment, work with a full-time faculty member and perform contemporary research culminating in an end-of-semester research symposium. These opportunities have enabled STEM-inclined students to explore the variety of STEM options available to them and make changes to majors before it is 'too late'. Alumni have stated that they feel' confidently prepared for graduate school, professional school and STEM careers.'
