Faculty Teaching/Learning Communities (TLCs) As Precursor to SoTL
Abstract
At Atlanta Metropolitan College, an urban community college of 3,000 students, faculty development as a formal entity is just beginning. Because faculty desired to address, at the outset, so many of the challenges typical of first generation urban college students, we decided to launch faculty development by pairing respective cohorts of faculty with specific issues. These faculty teaching/learning cohorts or communities explored and studied specific challenges and the pedagogical issues related to them. This session will showcase three of the communities, their topics of exploration and the processes in which they engaged to reach their teaching/learning objectives. We will also discuss next steps for progressing from our Teaching/Learning Communities to actual SoTL Communities.
