Teacher, Know Thyself

Abstract

Because many employers hire based on “emotional intelligence,” it is vital that teachers “Know Thyself” and be able to convey the concept of emotional intelligence to their students. If, as Goleman says, eighty percent of people are hired based on emotional intelligence, then we as teachers not only need to know ourselves, but we must also be able to help students develop their own emotional intelligence. Following the power point and discussion, participants will do some group and individual activities as a follow up to the presentation on emotional intelligence. Handouts will be provided so that teachers can return to their colleges equipped to encourage their students to include this vitally important aspect into their expertise. Also, participants will be given an emotional intelligence inventory to take with them that they can take at their leisure which will help them to determine their own level of emotional intelligence.
