Building a Culture of Academic Engagement and Community Across Campus
Abstract
While our University's Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) has historically supported SoTL, recent focus has shifted to Faculty Learning Communities (FLC) that integrate SoTL in various degrees. The objective of this panel discussion is to compare the experiences of the faculty and the outcomes of three FCL initiatives: 1) the CTL Scholars, who are independently working on SoTL projects, 2) a year-long FLC pre-tenured cohort, who are discussing teaching and learning, tenure, and the SoTL process and 3) a pedagogically-centered book club. Each panel member will discuss his or her experiences as part of these initiatives, their reasons for choosing the specific FLC initiative, and what they've learned from taking part in the FLC and SoTL processes. Because the three groups of faculty represent different disciplines and levels of teaching and research experience, the discussion should provide all participants with ideas for how to best integrate SoTL into FLCs.
