Building a Portfolio of Faculty Development Options for Engaged Teaching & Learning
Abstract
Academic service-learning is a form of course-based teaching and learning in which students engage in structured service and action that directs them to apply what they are learning to community-based issues and real-world problems. Many faculty find service-learning an appealing pedagogy for enhancing the student learning experience, and increasingly colleges and universities are investigating faculty development strategies for supporting the design, implementation, and assessment of quality academic service-learning courses. This presentation will explore a portfolio of programs and resources that have been implemented by one university's Office of Service-Learning to provide institutional support for faculty engaged in academic service-learning. Attendees at this session will learn about these faculty development portfolio items related to service-learning and be able to relate them to the context of their institutions. Attendees will also be invited to discuss and share ideas for faculty development program from their institutions.
