Cognitive Affective Learning and the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning
Abstract
Our institutions share a commitment to understanding the connections between the cognitive and affective in teaching and learning. We value and support the development of holistic educational theories and practice that promote deep and enduring learning and ethical and civic engagement. These SoTL projects are carried out in myriad ways, and the disciplines are wide-ranging. At UMass Dartmouth, Cognitive Affective Learning SoTL projects include the following disciplines: Portuguese, Political Science, Medical Laboratory Science, and Education. Project topics include civic engagement, learner motivation, intentionality. Service-learning is a fundamental component in several projects at UMass Dartmouth, providing students with opportunities for meaningful learning and civic engagement. Students learn more about and become engaged in state government and policy after taking part in service-learning projects. Pre-service teachers gain hands-on experience with K-12 students, working with students who may lack motivation to learn. Collaboration with students in K-12 also helps motivate foreign language learners.
