Microteaching for Preservice Teachers in a Mathematics Teacher Education Program
Abstract
This session highlights the rationale, implementation, and results of a study in which twenty-seven preservice elementary teachers, from a university instructor in mathematics teacher education program at one university in Singapore, observed, critiqued and provided feedback on their peers' micro-teaching. The preservice teachers were all graduates from either local or overseas universities. They were enrolled in a one-year teacher certification program for teaching elementary schools at the university at the time of the study. The session will demonstrate how microteaching in the university mathematics teacher education classes can contribute to the preparation of elementary school mathematics teachers in today's dynamic global economy. Attendees can expect to learn how to structure microteaching sessions meaningfully for preservice teachers. A PowerPoint presentation and whole group discussion will be used to illustrate how microteaching was conducted in the mathematics teacher education program.
