Description of Lecture
Southern Poetry Review has a long and prestigious history in contemporary American literature. Founded in 1958 by Guy Owen in Florida, it is the second oldest poetry journal in the region, and the list of “major” poets who have appeared in SPR is a long one. The presentation will focus on current efforts to keep the journal a vibrant presence in today’s literary marketplace, looking also at plants for its future. Smith will discuss challenges and pleasures of the editorial process, illustrating along the way the kinds of poetry SPR currently publishes. James Smith, English
