Description of Lecture
Friedl Dicker-Brandeis, a protégé of Walter Gropius and a graduate of the Bauhaus School, became a prisoner of the Nazis in the Theresienstadt concentration camp. Until she was transported to her death, she taught clandestine art classes for the children in the camp. Some of the work produced still remains. The images provide compelling windows to life in the concentration camp and into the insightful minds of the children in the most desperate surroundings. Harris will present images and research, demonstrating that Dicker-Brandeis was a successful artist in her own right as well as an inspirational pedagogue. Robert Harris, Music
