Crystal Middleton is an educator who has taught and led with compassion and expectations for 15 years. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education from Augusta State University, master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Georgia Regents University and her Educational Specialist degree in Educational Leadership from Augusta University. She has experience as a substitute teacher, 3-5 teacher, instructional specialist, assistant principal; she currently serves as the principal of McBean Elementary School. She is married to Sean, and they have two wonderful children, Mckenzie and Sean.

Second Presenter's Brief Biography

Katrina Prophet is an educator who works diligently to inspire children to reach high heights. She is currently in her 13th year working as a teacher in the Richmond County School System. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education from Georgia Southern University and later received a master’s degree in Accomplished Teaching-Curriculum and Instruction from Georgia Southern University. In addition to degrees, she has endorsements in Mathematics, English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Computer Science, and holds Tier 1 Educational Leadership certification.

Relevance

Our presentation primarily focuses on the Heart with the incorporation of the Head and Home. We have found that when student’s social and emotional needs are addressed and supported, we can promote learning and impact their academic achievement. Meeting the needs of teachers and staff members social and emotional needs impacts the manner in which they teach and care for the students.

Brief Program Description

The difficulties faced by students and educators are more challenging than ever, but teachers are expected to show up each day and students are expected to make academic gains. The proactive measures implemented by our mental health team to address the plethora of needs of students and staff members will be shared. Participants will learn ways to partner with community members and other stakeholders to support various initiatives.

Summary

Our presentation will discuss the strategies that have been implemented at our school to address the social and emotional needs of our students that must be met before attempting to provide instruction. Some of the strategies shared will be check in and check our forms, various clubs to provide students with a champion that they interact with frequently (safety patrol, flag crew, morning news, backpack program). The impact of partnering with local agencies such as the local hospitals, colleges, churches and other agencies that have resources to assist you with caring for your students and teachers.

We will share information about the impact of the partnership with Augusta University’s School of Nursing to provide mental health services, medical care and more to the students and their families at the school through a grant. The impact of various community stakeholders to provide resources to meet the basic needs of the students to allow them to be prepared to learn with they arrive to school.

Strategies will also be provided for administrators and district leaders on ways to support staff members to help them through the various challenges they may face to allow them to have the desire to show up each day and give the students their best regardless of what they personally experience. We need teachers and staff members at their best so they can be present and effective so students can learn.

We will also provide strategies to help staff and teachers understand the backgrounds of their students to encourage empathy while holding students accountable for accomplishing their goals.
