Relevance
After being thrown into the fire my first year of teaching, I really started to explore how SEL practices could benefit students all ages and not just in the elementary school setting. I believe this presentation would directly align to the Heart Strand: Social and Emotional skills. My approach aims to help students recognize their own emotions and what each means in terms of how they relate to others (both peers and adults in the school building). The goal is for students to learn how to self-regulate using various strategies that can be utilized in everyday life and not just in the school setting. If students can learn to recognize their emotions, name them, and start the process of regulation, we can help them approach the academic side of school in a more positive and open-minded way, thus showing growth and/or achievement.
Brief Program Description
This session aims to provide teachers with tools and strategies to create a classroom environment that cultivates students' emotional and mental health. Teachers will learn de-escalation strategies, how to utilize a peace corner, and will walk away with the confidence and autonomy to implement various SEL strategies in their own classes.
Summary
My presentation was first utilized in a district wide summer PD session. I am just a classroom teacher and have no merchandise or services to sell.
This presentation comes from the viewpoint of a general education, classroom teacher. As teachers, we are the gate keepers for our school counselors and so many "issues" can mitigated by providing emotional supports in the classroom. The primary strategy I use in my classroom is my peace corner. By providing students with a physical space to step away from their problem, they are able to evaluate the situation, take a break from whatever the issue is, and work on regulating their emotions in a health way rather than retaliating or lashing out. When teachers truly embrace Maslow before Bloom students have the tools they need to be able to tackle the Bloom. We need to teach students (adults too) that it is okay not to be okay and their is great success in recognizing that. This presentation comes from a very practical mindset - What is going to make my classroom run smoother and make my students happy to be here everyday?
