Brief Program Description
Dickson County is reimagining the systemic disciplinary practices. Attempting to reduce exclusionary practices, the district is creating a plan and allocating resources to be more proactive in dealing with challenging behaviors of today's youth. Practices examine why change is needed, and revising antiquated practices. We are focused upon providing teachers and administrators a toolbox to use with students. These may include Trauma informed trainings, escape spaces, sensory rooms, and teacher self-care rooms.
Summary
Our 8,000-student suburban school system is providing a multi-tiered system of supports to teachers and administrators to assist in dealing with the challenging behaviors of today's youths. We have reviewed practices which have been ineffective or outdated. In particular, we wish to focus on restorative practices.
The information is based upon guidance from recent State Legislation which provides guidance to develop discipline policies that:
- balance accountability with an understanding of traumatic behavior;
- teach school and classroom rules while reinforcing that violent or abusive behavior is not allowed at school;
- minimize disruptions to education with an emphasis on positive behavioral supports and behavioral intervention plans;
- create consistent rules and consequences; and
- model respectful, non-violent relationships.
