This proposal relates to Strand 1 (Head: Academic Achivement & Leadership) as a way to engage attendees (learners) in a meaningful conversation on a variety of topics that will help them grow professionally. Rather the attendee is seeking to gain knowledge or capitalizing on their own strength, this share session will allow all participants to walk away with at least one effective strategy.
Brief Program Description
This workshop will allow educators to collaborate with others and participate in an intentional extended discussion on working with students considered “at risk” among a small group/peers. Discussions will include topics such as student engagement, creating a safe culture, managing behavior, promoting social and emotional learning, and building a positive relationship for students to excel. During the discussion, attendees will participate in layers of conversations where they can share or gain effective strategies among colleagues.
Summary
This workshop will allow educators to collaborate with others and participate in an intentional extended discussion on working with students considered “at risk” among a small group/peers. This will be a share session where educators and school leaders can come together to discuss best practices and gain effective strategies. Discussions will be led by the attendees and may include topics such as student engagement, creating a safe culture, managing behavior, promoting social and emotional learning, and building a positive relationship for students to excel. During the discussion, attendees will participate in layers of conversations where they can share or gain effective strategies among colleagues. This workshop takes on an "unconference" approach where attendees put their learning in their own hands where they can walk away with at least one effective strategy they can use tomorrow.
Evidence
Professional Learning Networks have been proven to be an effective strategy where educators are able to connect with others, share ideas, reflect on teaching practices, and gain effective strategies. Share sessions/round table discussions are effective since it creates a more intimate environment where learners can ask questions, seek for understanding, or capitalize on their strength. This workshop takes on an "unconference" approach where attendees put their learning in their own hands.
Learning Objectives
- Educators will create a common shared definition of what it means for a student to be considered “at risk”.
- Educators will participate small group/round table discussion on student engagement, creating a positive classroom culture, classroom management, and other effective instructional strategies.
- Educators will gain/share effective instructional strategies to other participating educators for professional growth. Educators will be able to share best practices currently used at their school with others.
Biographical Sketch
Reginald Carruth currently serves as an Assistant Principal at LaVergne Middle School. He previously served as an Instructional Coach, Dean of Students, and Math Department Head at Whitworth-Buchanan Middle School, an MTeach teacher-partner at Middle Tennessee State University, and hosted Parent Engagement Nights at LaVergne Middle School, where he was a site-based presenter. He was chosen as Teacher of the Year, 2015–2016, and has presented at several conferences including the Rutherford County Schools Summer Conference, National Youth-At-Risk Conference, and the AMLE Conference.
