Relevance
We often discuss the importance of social emotional skills and engagement but those are often words and not actions. I will discuss the importance of engagement and how this became skills that brought our team and the families that we work with closer together during the global pandemic.
Brief Program Description
During the pandemic our amazing team of social workers began checking authentic check ins with coworkers, students, families, and stakeholders. We created a culture where emails and meetings started with.....How Are You.... Really? During this presentation we will talk about the importance of relationships and practice hands on techniques to engage and show the compassion and empathy that was needed to deal with a pandemic and needed in every day life to be effective in our jobs and lives.
Summary
I will use brief introduction to discuss how our team of social workers rallied during the pandemic and began showing vulnerability in a new way by asking simple questions like "How are you really" and "Check in with me on a scale of 1-10". I will then engage the members in a discussion about engagement by using video clips of positive and negative interactions and provide clear examples of ways to engage the people we serve, the people we work with, our families, and our friends. This will be an interactive session and all members will leave with basic skills to complete for a week and self assess the effectiveness on their work and personal lives.
Evidence
I truly understand and value the amount of evidenced based research that is needed in our practice but I think it often overlooks the importance of human interaction and relationship building. My evidence for this presentation is discussing how a team of social workers developed cohesion and relationships that helped them thrive in their work during the global pandemic.
Learning Objectives
Develop skills to ensure aunthintic concern for coworkers and clients
Improve skills of checking on people first and engaging
Self Assess your current effectiveness
