Relevance
HOME: At-risk youth and their families often struggle for day-to-day needs not covered by food stamps or social assistance. This workshop builds partnerships within the school and families and teachers whilst developing and strengthening business collaboration through a social services program that is being duplicated around the State of Florida and beyond! Use social media to build, share, celebrate and recruit!
Brief Program Description
Did you know most boys prefer women's deodorant? Have you considered having to choose between a gallon of milk, tampons, underpants or laundry detergent? These are the struggles children and their families face. Open your own Green Devils Pantry & Closet. Provide a place for no questions, no judgment for people trying to get by while letting your families, alums and businesses help you! Homes include businesses in the community and the families who call your area HOME.
Summary
The Green Devils Closet serves hundres of students in Pinellas County Florida's second largest high school. It didn't start without bumps in the road--in fact, it began as a Prom dress collection site when the creator realized more dire needs: deodorant, soap, detergent, underpants and more. This workshop teaches the coordinator of record on-site how to start their closet from the ground up. With 14 years of success, the facilitator has testimonials from children and their families who have shopped the Closet in their darkest times, now coming back to "pay it forward." See how this can become YOUR LEGACY.
Evidence
Students and their families are able to "shop" a place at school for recycled school tees (to build school spirit), toiletries (imagine not having toilet paper--food stamps do not provide), hand soap, school supplies. Present and past students will attest through letters and video testimonials how the Green Devils Pantry & Clost saved them, inspired them and made them realize the power of giving back. The Closet serves HUNDREDS of children per month. You can too!
