Brief Program Description

Participants will learn critical engagement strategies that, when paired with selected young adult novels, will expand perspectives from within Latinx communities and demonstrate ways for teachers to humanize classroom experiences. Participants will gain pedagogical approaches for cultivating inclusive classrooms where experiences of undocumented youth are honored and engaged, and the voices of Latinx students are amplified through literature and classroom experience.

Biographical Sketch

During his eleven years at Kennesaw State University, Dr. Gillis has served as the Field Experience Coordinator and Undergraduate Coordinator for the Department of Secondary & Middle Grades Education and was the Executive Director of the KSU Conference on Literature for Children and Young Adults for eight years.

Dr. Gillis has authored two books, Chris Crutcher: A Stotan for Young Adults (with Dr. Pamela Cole) and Sexual Content in Young Adult Literature: Reading between the Sheets. Dr. Gillis' publications have appeared in Teacher Education Quarterly, English Journal, Voices from the Middle, The Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy, The ALAN Review, and Signal Journal. He is the editor of ALAN Picks, a monthly online young adult literature book review page for The Assembly on Literature for Adolescents at NCTE (ALAN) and currently serves as a board member for ALAN.
