Brief Program Description
Blended Individualized Learning combines the best of online learning with traditional teaching. Presenters will share step-by-step how we designed an easy to follow K–5 school-wide blended learning model to engage and empower students through the use of playlists and “leveling up.” Participants will also have access to view the daily implementation manual, classroom videos, and sample playlists created by teachers. These best practices led our Title I inner-city school from an F (23 percent) to a C School while cutting our teacher turnover rate in half and changed the school’s image in the community for the better.

Biographical Sketch
Amy Rhyne is the Principal at East Elementary School (EES) and has served in this role for eight years. Since her arrival at EES, the school has expanded from 570 students to over 900 students, with a waiting list to attend the Dual Immersion Magnet Program. The school received the honor of being named a Covey Lighthouse School in March, 2017. East Elementary has visitors and guests attending tours from across the nation to learn about the best practices that have led to the school’s success. Prior to her years at EES, Mrs. Rhyne served as an administrator at Third Creek Elementary for seven years and taught at various Title I Schools across the district totaling over twenty years in education. She served as 2016-17 Iredell-Statesville Schools Principal of the Year, as well as 2017-18 NC Southwest Regional Principal of the Year. She received her BA in Elementary Education from Appalachian State University, Masters in School Administration from Garner-Webb University, and Educational Administration (EdS.) degree from Appalachian State University.
On a personal note, Mrs. Rhyne was a student of Iredell-Statesville Schools, graduating in 1990 alongside her future husband, John (married in '94). They have three teenage children: Marley (junior at LRU), Jordan (freshman at MCC) and Nicole (junior at WIHS).
She is a reflective, passionate educator who focuses on best practices and strategies to support and change the future possiblities for all children. Every decision made with her teachers requires answering the question: How is that best for children?
My name is Angela Navey Burgess. I grew up in Statesville and attended ISS throughout my K-12 education. This is my seventh year at East Iredell Elementary and it is where my four children go as well. I will finish this summer with my masters in School Administration. I have taught 5th, 3rd, 1st and Kindergarten. I have taught both in the general English classroom and have been a part of the Dual Immersion program. It is my calling to help both students and educators continue to learn and grow. I am married to Brian Burgess and we have three boys and one girl. I enjoy spending time with my family, ministering to others, watching my boys play ball, swim and wrestle, reading, and outdoor activities.
