This poster session will highlight how the use of Habits of Mind help to develop the skills necessary to be college- and career-ready. It will also document how Habits of Mind help to increase student achievement.

Academic achievement has increased for students utilizing Habits of Mind by increasing our school score from a D to a C and from not meeting growth to exceeding growth

Summary

Parkwood Elementary is a K - 5 International Habits of Mind Learning Community of Excellence. Since embedding the habits, our school has raised student achievement. Teachers and administrators integrate habits of mind daily in classroom lessons, office discipline and interactions between staff and students and among staff members. By utilizing a common vocabulary, habits helps to provide the foundation for student learning, interactions, and behavior.

Evidence

Student achievement continues to grow utilizing habits of mind for students K - 5. These habits and dispositions provide our students with the skills required to be college and career ready, based on workforce and university research.

Biographical Sketch

Linda Kopec is the principal at Parkwood Elementary School in Onslow County. She has been an administrator for over seventeen years. Prior to that, she served as a school counselor. She holds a Masters Degree in School Administration from East Carolina University, A Masters in Counseling Psychology from Texas A & M, Central Texas and a Bachelors degree in Psychology and Political Science from University of Maryland University College, European Division. Ms. Kopec is a Licensed Professional Counselor, Nationally Certified Psychologist, Nationally Certified Clinical Psychotherapist, Nationally Certified Counselor, Nationally Certified School Counselor and holds K - 12 Curriculum Specialist, School Administration, and School Counselor certification in the state of North Carolina. She serves on the NC Principal and Assistant Principals Association Board, the NC School Counselors Association Board and on the NC ACT Advisory Council.
