Relevance

The proposal directly correlates with the conference strands "Heart" and "Head." The proposal mirrors research based on the Growth Mindset of students and a school community. The EXCEL principles instill 5 core beliefs that will resonate within the hearts of students and the community by not only offering encouragement, but clear direction of where the student/community's mindset should be. By capturing the "heart" of the school community, the "head" will follow. Once students believe in themselves then there is no limit to the academic achievements that can be acquired.

Scientists have theories and rules which help govern the greatest phenoma known to man currently which is success. Sticking to rules and pushing limits have aided in the development of new discoveries. In short, being excellent is the being to discovering the greater you. During the process of discovery is where you began to unfold and dig into your own mind’s eye and become a much bolder and brighter you.

In this program, if a leader implements the EXCEL principles for forty days lives will be changed drastically for the better. To EXCEL is to:

Eliminate excuses

Xray attitudes

C "see" the cost to be great

Exceed the expectations

Live, laugh, and love

Teaching students to EXCEL totally changes the perception of their abilities. Once students believe in themselves, there are no boundaries for what can be accomplished. These same principles can become a way of life for any school community.

Evidence

In 1988, Dr. Dweck first presented a research-based model to show the impact of mindsets. She showed how a person’s mindset sets the stage for either performance goals or learning goals. A student with a performance goal might be worried about looking smart all the time, and avoid challenging work. On the other hand, a student with a learning goal will pursue interesting and challenging tasks in order to learn more. In subsequent studies, Dr. Dweck found that people’s theories about their own intelligence had a significant impact on their motivation, effort, and approach to challenges. Those who believe their abilities are malleable are more likely to embrace challenges and persist despite failure. This model of the fixed vs. growth mindset shows how cognitive, affective, and behavioral features are linked to one’s beliefs about the malleability of their intelligence.
