Morningside’s Ticking for Fluency (TFF) goes directly to the heart of the parents being their child’s first teacher. This program will help make an impact on the closing of an achievement gap where the doors have been open to long. There is no better way to empower a parent than to be able to give them the tools they need to work with and to see their child reach his/her potential. Ticking for Fluency does just that. Parents are taught how to make the reading connection that is needed to develop their child’s ability to read with fluency and comprehension. Ticking for Fluency will close many achievement gaps for all students with the support of the family, teachers and community.
Ticking for Fluency was developed as a tool for parents of ALL students to develop and enhance reading fluency and comprehension in just one minute. TFF is the tool that is very much needed among our children. Parents are at a loss on how to work with their child as well as how to help the teachers teach their child. Then there is that question or comment made by teachers “What do teachers need the most? The answer is always the same and that is “more parental involvement”. Ticking for Fluency has provided answers to the question above. The gap between teachers, parents and students is being addressed through TFF. Ticking For Fluency will allow parents to work with their child at home in reading. They are trained by the teacher in the classroom. Parents are allowed to visit the classroom and sit beside their child while learning how to teach their child to read with fluency and comprehension in ONE MINUTE per evening or during homework time.
Brief Program Description
Educators teach parents how to teach their children/students how to read with fluency and comprehension in just ONE MINUTE per evening. The objective of this program is to increase student achievement, promote parental involvement and bridge the gap between home and school. Ticking For Fluency is the missing piece that has been discovered to make a difference in the lives of our youth.
Summary
We have had great success with a program that has increased our students’ comprehension and fluency in reading. Morningside Elementary School (MSES) started the program November 17, 2014. We celebrated out first six weeks “Ticking for Fluency” January 20, 2014. MSES has an enrollment of 490 students. In the first Ticking for Fluency cycle, six weeks, four nights per week students read for ONE MINUTE with their parents. We had 101 students to earn a special award. These students did not miss a night for six weeks of reading. We also had a number of students who only missed one or two nights of reading in six weeks. Each nine weeks, the total number of participants has increased. At the end of the nine weeks, a TFF celebration takes place and is one that all students want to attend.
Ticking for Fluency is a reading strategy that MSES have implemented for our students and parents. The teachers were introduced to this strategy in their grade level planning meeting by the principal and Parent Involvement Coordinator (PIC). This strategy and procedures were demonstrated for the teachers. Teachers were shown how we could help parents of MSES teach their students at home to read with fluency and comprehension in ONE MINUTE PER NIGHT.
As soon as the teachers were taught TFF (Ticking For Fluency), the principal and PIC began putting together an authentic parent involvement activity at school. Parents were invited to the classroom to sit with their child and learn what to do with their students at home. Teachers demonstrated what the parents were to do each night with their child. The parents were taught how to ask the students to read a passage on grade level for ONE MINUTE. They were taught to have their child read the entire story to himself and answer the questions. Parents and students recorded the answers to question s on the back of the performance sheet each night. Parents timed the student while he/she reads aloud for exactly 1 minute. The parents were taught not to help fix mistakes. The teachers demonstrated to the parents what to do while the student is reading, how to mark errors with a line under the word (___), highlight the word or circle the word. The parents were taught if the student is stuck on a word for 2 seconds, say the word and count it as a mistake. After the child has finished reading the passage, the parent then records the number of words read and the number of errors. This process is repeated every night for ONE MINUTE using the same passage. It is expected at the beginning of the week for students not to be able to read the entire passage in one minute. The idea is, with repeated practice, students will be able to read the passage fluently by the end of the week. For parents who were unable to attend the workshop in the students’ classrooms, an evening training session was held. In addition, there were parents who heard about the activity and came to the school during the day to be trained so they could help their child.
The passages are sent home with the students Monday and returned on Friday. A note book was prepared for the teachers with dividers for each student in the school per class for record keeping purposes. The passages are copied and placed in the teacher’s mailbox. All the work has been taken off the classroom teacher. When the students return to school on Friday, their forms are placed behind their name in the TFF notebook. This notebook also serves as a conferencing tool for the teacher. In addition, when students return their forms on Friday, the teacher provides a sticker for that child to be placed on the TFF chart displayed with student data in the hallways of our school.
Currently in Houston County, teacher assess student’s reading us the running record method of determining reading growth by Fountas and Pinnell’s Leveled Reading Method. As a means of formative and summative assessment, teachers regularly complete running records using Marie Clay’s system for anlysis and coding erros and words read per minute. TFF is a method developed based on Fountas & Pinnell and Marie Clay in which Parents can be trained in the running record method of assessment to work with their students on a nightly basis to impact and improve reading fluency and reading comprehension.

Feedback from teachers: One of MSES 4th grade teachers reported she has 21 students and every one of her students increased reading levels according to her summative assessment on the literacy inventory. She also reported that some of her students moved up 3 and 4 levels. She also reported that one of her students moved up 6 levels.
Another 4th grade teacher stated: My student’s reading levels increased. My students are motivated to read. She even stated that her students liked it because they get to spend time with their parents. Her students even became very concerned when they did not receive their passages for the week. For instance, the week we were out for President’s Day, students were disappointed because they did not do Ticking For Fluency that week.
A 2nd grade teacher stated: The kids are really excited! The students are more fluent in their reading. More students are participating in her class. The first 6 weeks she only had 4that completed their passages every night for 6 weeks. This time she has 8 students that completed their 6 passages for these 6 weeks during the second cycle for TFF.
A Kindergarten teacher and a paraprofessional stated: We have seen our students increase in their reading levels. The paraprofessional stated: the students that do the Ticking For Fluency with their parents see a greater increase in those students’ reading levels vs. the students that have not tried it yet. They have seen an increase in their mastery of sight words also. The students that participate in TFF are more confident readers and writers.
One of MSES 1st grade teachesr stated: Her class had high participation. Almost all of her students are participating in the program. The teacher said she rewards her students; when the school did the first celebration with them she noticed almost all of her students were participating in the program. The teacher also stated: when I did an informal assessment in December, I began to notice my student’s reading levels were up. This time when I did an informal assessment in February and March, I noticed my students reading levels were even higher.
TFF has proven to be a hugh success! Morningside started the program November 17, 2014. We celebrated our first six weeks of “Ticking For Fluency” January 20, 2015. Morningside went from celebrating TFF with 101 students to 176 students at the last nine weeks celebration. Each celebration celebrates students that did not miss a single night of reading for six weeks.
At the end of the fourth nine weeks when teachers completed the end of year Literacy Inventory, students that participated in TFF with fidelity increased in reading levels 4 to 7 levels since the first nine weeks. Students who did not participate in TFF only saw an increase of 2 to 3 reading levels. This is huge! We truly believe this has made a total difference in the lives of our students and the abilities of parents to work with their child at home.

Dr. Pat Witt lives in Perry, GA and is currently the Principal at Morningside Elementary. She has been in education more than 37 years. She has been a teacher, an Assistant Principal for Instruction, is a nationally certified Principal Mentor, and has taught Doctoral students at Argosy University. Dr. Witt received her Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood from Georgia Southern University, her Master’s in Early Childhood and Educational Leadership from University of Georgia, and an Education Specialist degree in Early Childhood from Georgia Southwestern University. She received her Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Argosy University in 2007. After completing her Doctorate, Dr. Witt was invited back to Argosy University as an adjunct professor to teach Doctoral Students the process of writing a dissertation. Dr. Witt has been published in Principal’s Magazine. Dr. Witt is trained in The Seven Habits for Highly Effective People and is a participating Leader In Me School. In addition, Dr. Witt led her school to being named the first Georgia Family Friendly School by the Governor’s Office of Student Achievement. Morningside Elementary also has been awarded the Georgia School Bell Award for its exemplary parent involvement program by the Georgia Association of Educational Leaders.

Pamelia Harper lives in Warner Robins, Ga. She is currently working at Morningside Elementary School as a Parental Involvement Coordinator. She has been in education over 25 years. She has received her Associate of Science in 2002. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Theology in 2013. As a Parent Involvement Coordinator she has received the Georgia Family Friendly Award and PIC Spot Light, Her PATTS Program (Parents and Teachers Teaching Students) has been instrumental in helping her school capture the School Bell Award.
Mrs. Harper began her work on her Master of Arts in Theology in 2013 with a focus on the family with the purpose of combining her interest in Parental Involvement to help educate parents on how important it is to stay connected and involve in their children education.

Educators teach parents how to teach their children/students how to read with fluency and comprehension in just ONE MINUTE per evening. The objective of this program is to increase student achievement, promote parental involvement and bridge the gap between home and school. Ticking For Fluency is the missing piece that has been discovered to make a difference in the lives of our youth.
