Relevance

This proposal comprehensively relates to the “5H” Conference Strands. However, we will focus on the Heart and the Hands. As it relates to the “Heart” we will be providing information on Ripple Effects Motivational Counseling and Behavioral Intervention Software I have used with schools to improve attendance, attitude and achievement. Ripple Effects provides personalized, peer narrated, multi-tiered behavior interventions and personal guidance through more than 575 mix and match, interactive tutorials for students, and another 136 for staff. Ripple Effects is an evidence-based program with proven positive impacts on academic achievement, dropout rates and school climate and behavior. As it relates to the “Hands” we will be providing access to the School Safety Profiler a free online tool to measure perceived safety in schools, so participants can reduce or prevent violence. The Profiler is designed to help school leaders meet needs assessment requirements for school safety funds, as well as to guide them in creating a positive school environment. Also related to the “Hands” each participant will also receive a complimentary eBook “The Beast and the Least” an exciting children’s book with accompanying “Leadership & Teambuilding Modules” to help school and district teams drive improvement for all students.

His students received the Gates Millennium and Horatio Alger Scholarships and he graduated 100% of his Black Male students in 2012.

Summary

The Multimedia presentation will provide evidence-based material, hands-on knowledge around the challenge of increasing student achievement and success especially for students at-risk. This proposal comprehensively relates to the “5H” Conference Strands. However we will focus on the Heart and the Hands. As it relates to the “Heart”, we will be providing information on Ripple Effects Motivational Counseling and Behavioral Intervention Software. The Profiler is designed to help school leaders meet needs assessment requirements for school safety funds, as well as to guide them in creating a positive school environment. Also related to the “Hands” each participant will also receive a complimentary eBook “The Beast and the Least” an exciting children’s book with accompanying “Leadership & Teambuilding Modules” I use to help design and build school and district teams to drive improvement for all students. Dr. Kirton is a retired public educator and now a research distinguished professor and motivational speaker that uses the latest technological tools to engage the audience. Dr. Kirton is also a trained Project Adventure Facilitator that will bring the session to life engaging the participants in a game based learning style. Administrators, Counselors and Teachers will leave the session with a personal work product in hand, innovative tools and a framework that targets resources and engages everyone on the team with the goal of improving attendance, attitude and achievement for all students.

Evidence

The Ripple Effects system I use is a comprehensive computer based intervention program created to build personal strengths, change behavior and address personal problems. It is a system of integrated resources for effective, culturally competent, tiered interventions to address non-academic factors in school and life success. An integrated suite of software anchors the Ripple Effects and web-based tools designed to enable needs assessment, personalize training, evaluation, staff development and data management. The Content of the program is based in modules. According to the need of the student, the student picks the module that focuses on the behavior needed to be modified and works at a self-pace to understand why he or she is acting out this behavior. The images and stories are based on real case scenarios and the student has the option of interactively working with scenario that parallels their own and come to a conclusion of how the scenario should play out. Furthermore, the program has built in levels of program readiness, content expertise, instructional expertise, cultural competence, motivation and simple access to adaptation with fidelity to evidence-based practices. Ripple Effects has proven to be a very worthwhile program for schools who implement it correctly. This is a great resource for character development in schools lacking strong character education curricula. Most importantly, the program seems to be diversified enough to meet the individual needs of most if not all students. Ripple Effects delivers measurable outcomes, Randomized Control Trials as well as quasi-experimental (comparison group) evaluation studies which show that as little as 7 contact hours positively impact attendance, behavior and academic achievement, across a range of real world environments, not just in pristine, heavily subsidized university studies. Qualitative case studies indicate the program works with students from a wide range of backgrounds, from rural Indian reservations, to urban juvenile justice settings. It reduces in school suspension rates, and improves communication with adults. Trained counselors and teachers have successfully delivered it as well as non-professional personnel, from a school custodian, to cafeteria worker, to peer mediators have had similar outcomes. 30 major awards from the education, software, health, and communications industries indicates that it meets the highest standards for content expertise, accessibility to diverse learners and engagement, and ease of use. A theory base drawn from more than 700 studies of the efficacy of specific cognitive, behavioral, attention and social skill training strategies in live instruction settings has been mined to transfer the most successful of those techniques to the computer, preserving content fidelity while allowing site specific adaptation and making these techniques more accessible to students who may be kinesthetic learners, be weak readers, or have short attention spans. All of the supplemental programs, solutions and real case studies I present are connected to the Ripple Effects core implementation strategies and share similar evidence and results.
