Relevance
Because of the alternative setting and the transient nature of the population, PBL needs to be adapted. This presentation will use RCD, CCSS, and PBL together to produce cross-curricular, relevant units with portable skills for students in alternative settings, specifically the residential treatment facility.
Brief Program Description
Adapt problem- based learning to alternative settings, specifically the residential treatment facility. Help support and promote academic achievement for students in these alternative settings, while finding strategies for teachers and administrators to implement. Learn how to make a way when there doesn't seem to be one!
Summary
This presentation will explain ways to adapt rigorous curriculum design and problem-based learning for a transient population in an alternative setting. Participants will be given various strategies to help teach portable skills using a problem-solving to learning.
Evidence
Based on the research of Larry Ainsworth and RCD, we have developed and adapted units of relevant topics for students in an alternative setting. Using ideas from John Savery, problem-based learning is integrated throughout. Students come away with a problem-solving, relevant approach to learning.
