Abstract

Emergency and Urgent Care Services and the Effect on People in Rural Areas

Purpose: There is little research concerning the differences of rural emergency and urgent care compared to similar health facilities in urban areas. In this study, we aimed to discover what the differences are in emergency and urgent care facilities in rural areas versus urban areas. We hypothesized that there is indeed a significant difference in rural areas compared with urban areas concerning factors such as access to urgent and emergency care facilities, transportation to high quality care in a reasonable amount of time, and in the quality of the care provided in local emergency departments. The intended outcome is to gain understanding of the difference in the quality of care and the access to care in rural areas versus urban areas.

Method: Data will be collected from students in the form of a voluntary survey that will be distributed to students in major core classes. Participants will complete a 20 item questionnaire that includes demographics, confidence in their county’s healthcare system, and quality of care provided to them in emergency situations.

Findings and Conclusions: The data collection is in progress and the results will be analyzed using IBM SPSS V23 with descriptive and inferential statistics. Results will be available for presentation at the conference if the abstract is accepted.
