Abstract
Abstract
Title: Prevalence of Sleep Deprivation among College Students
Purpose: Sleep deprivation is a frequent obstacle that many college students in America face. Insomnia in college students can have an immense impact on psychological and physical health, which greatly influence academic success. Research shows that 70% of college students qualify as sleep deprived. Sleep deprivation has also been linked with several diseases/disorders, including: depression, anxiety, and obesity. Our research question to be investigated is: does sleep deprivation affect college students physiologically and psychologically?
Methods: The participants will include college students that are at least eighteen years of age. They will be selected from our friends, classmates, and nursing classes that allow us to come and pass out the surveys. The nursing classes will include junior and senior level students. The method in which our research study will be by data collection by a twenty item survey questionnaire to 200 random college students at regional university in a rural community. The questionnaire will determine the students sleep habits and how their sleep affects their physiological and psychological health. Our research hypothesis is that out of all the 200 students we survey, the majority or at least 45% of the students will say that they suffer from sleep disturbances that affect their school and personal lives. Our data will be analyzed using IBM SPSS 23.0. We will use descriptive and chi-square statistics and explore the relationship to sleep and its effects on change on the students environment and lifestyle. Data collection is currently in progress and will be available for presentation at conference.
Conclusion: Gathering this data and researching this topic is important because it will help others understand the importance of sleep and how the amount of sleep college students receive affects many aspects of their lives.
