Abstract
Legislative term limits have been a topic of discussion in the political arena since the 1990s.Historically term limitation existed as an unspoken tradition, but recent trends in Congress have preempt conversation about amending the constitution to implement legislative term limits. Convincing arguments exist both in support of and against imposing legislative term limits. This paper contains information regarding positive outcomes in comparison with the political impact of term limits in states that have implemented term limits. I use information from qualitative research, opinion polls, and existing literature to provide an argument in support of legislative term limitation. This paper will discuss the ways that legislative term limits will benefit representative democracy by reducing congressional careerism, ensuring congressional turnover, and promoting representative attention to constituent service.
