Abstract

The future of higher education shows that continued pressure will be applied for greater enrollments and higher persistence rates alongside institutional efficiencies and cost savings, creating the potential for institutional consolidations. There is limited literature currently available on the relationship between consolidations of institutions of higher education and students’ sense of belonging or enrollment. This dissertation research study, currently in progress, is a problem of practice for the researcher and is designed to identify the factors that relate to students’ sense of belonging for students who matriculated in a post-consolidation environment. This mixed-methods study will identify factors that students feel contribute to their sense of belonging and may allow for universities to better understand these factors and build upon them to increase retention and progression.

Keywords

consolidation, sense of belonging, belonging
