Abstract

In an increasingly tumultuous digital landscape, teacher candidates need to be prepared to help their students navigate the world and examine media critically. For this project, we present a rationale for teaching Critical media literacy to teacher candidates, and we provide a framework for embedding these strategies into existing literacy education courses. Participants will experience a session that encourages questions and facilitates learning about best practices for implementing a Critical media literacy framework in educator preparation programs (EPPs). As teacher preparation facilitators, we will present a model of instruction that will be embedded within existing frameworks of reading instruction to better prepare our students to tackle an ever changing digital landscape. Further, we will provide a unit plan for implementation.
