Abstract

Professional development is one of the vital strategies in students’ success. The purpose of professional development is to improve learning for educators and students. Professional development can be either formal such as conference, seminar, workshop, work as a team, a college course or informal such as discussions among colleagues, independent reading and research, observation of a colleague’s work, and learning from a peer (Mizell,2010).

Educators participate in a variety of professional development activities to improve their quality and student achievement (Pharis,Wu,Sullivan, &Moore, 2019). However, according to the nationwide survey conducted in 2017 participants agreed that there is much work to be done to support teachers in their professional growth (Resources for Learning,2017).

In this study, an online professional development needs assessment survey was sent to the K-12 teachers in the states of Georgia and Florida. Teachers reported that even though the school leaders in their schools and systems are committed to professional learning, they do not appear to be deeply involved in decisions about their own professional learning such as deciding on their professional development needs and selecting professional development activities.

The results of this study can be beneficial to the school districts, school administrators, teachers and higher education in their professional development activity planning and evaluation.
