Presentation Abstract

Schools across the state and the nation face a significant concern in the education profession. Many educators are leaving the teaching field or seriously considering leaving earlier than expected. Couple this with the growing problem of new teacher retention, and anyone can see that our beloved institution is heading towards a major crisis if we are not already involved in one. One of the main culprits of the woes in education is teacher burnout. Developing a strong climate and culture in a classroom is very challenging for an educator experiencing burnout. In the “Extinguishing Teacher Burnout and Ignite School and Classroom Connectivity,” participants will engage in a workshop that will facilitate a conversation addressing the impact of teacher burnout on the profession, identification of the causes of teacher burnout, and a way to actively develop a personalized plan to decrease burnout and increase harmony in the personal and professional lives of educators leading to deeper connections in the school community. The presentation will also highlight how the Paulding County School District utilizes Behavioral Student Supports Teams (a combined PBIS and SEL Team) to implement a book study around Ms. Amber Harper’s work Hacking Teacher Burnout: 8 Steps to Go from Isolated to Empowered So You Can Overcome Any Challenge.

It is difficult for educators to connect with anyone when experiencing burnout’s overwhelming effects. This workshop aims to help education professionals identify the factors and gaps in their personal and professional lives that are moving them closer to burnout while assisting educators in developing actionable steps to pull themselves out of burnout and to a state of fulfillment. In addition, by addressing the causes of teacher burnout in their lives, educators will be better prepared to connect with the students and adults in their learning community.

The workshop participants will receive access to the presentation materials to replicate the experience with the professionals in their organization.
